Year 10 Work Experience – Summer Planning

Dear Parents,

In Year 10 there is an increased emphasis upon preparing pupils for the world of work, personal finance, enterprise and presentation skills. Next year your son/daughter will be participating in one week of work experience between Monday 9th - Friday 13th March 2009 which we hope will be a valuable learning experience and give an opportunity to explore a particular type of employment or use certain skills.

It is important to consider the quality of the placement and we would advise you to enable your child to work in a less familiar environment so that they can explore the job and work with a range of different people in different settings. We do not consider working in a nursery or primary school an effective placement unless your son or daughter is considering working with children or studying Health and Social Care (course requirement).

There are restrictions on the type of employment that a 14-15 year old can undertake for instance:
• Street trading (though some local authorities do allow children of 14 to be employed by their parents in street trading)
• Scrap metal sales
• Betting shops
• Petrol Stations
• House to house charitable collections
• work involving exposure to adult material or in situations which are for this reason otherwise unsuitable for Young People;
• a commercial kitchen, including fish & chip shops without a restaurant;
• work in that part of any butcher's shop or other premises connected with the killing of livestock, butchery or the preparation of carcasses or meat for sale;
• To be involved in the personal care of residents of any residential care home or nursing home
(further information is available from Connexions – 01295 -256224)

We have found that many parents are able to find placements for their son/daughters through personal contacts, friends and by telephoning companies.

There is always a lot of competition for more specialised and interesting placements as all the schools and colleges in this area expect their pupils to find work experience placements. – the summer holidays is an ideal time to try to get something organised and agreed before, perhaps, other pupils start looking.

Over the past 5 years the Banbury Rotary Club have been invited to come in to school and conduct “Mock Interviews” each student will have the opportunity to sit in front of a panel of two Rotarians and have a formal interview regarding their future career. This has been very successful and it helps to develop a very positive attitude towards the world of work.

For each student to benefit from an interview they are required, once they have arranged a work placement, to write a CV and letter of application as if they were applying for a job when leaving education. This will need to be handed in at the same time as the work experience placement form. No form will be accepted without a CV and letter of application.

In September, work experience forms will be given out to be completed by parents and returned to Mrs. S. Garrett, Work Experience Co-ordinator. It would be really helpful if you could organise a placement on behalf of your child before the forms are distributed. The next stage will be to undertake Health and Safety checks on the placements.

Clearly, the earlier decisions and arrangements are made, the more likely it will be that your son / daughter will have a placement which they are happy with.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs S Moss
