Dear Parent/Guardian

Now that Year 9 students have completed their SATs, it is our intention that after the May half term all Year 9 form groups will begin their GCSE Religious Studies course. As you are aware, GCSE Religious Studies is compulsory at Blessed George Napier and we feel that it will be beneficial to make more effective use of curriculum time by starting the course early.

There are two parts to the syllabus:

Paper 1 : St Mark`s Gospel
Paper 2 : Christian (R.C) Perspectives on Personal, Social and Moral issues

There are two text books we regularly use in school to teach these modules and pupils may wish to purchase their own copy of one or both of these, although there is certainly no compulsion to do so; some parents in the past have asked for a recommendation so that they can support their children at home, so I mention it simply as an option.

Christian Perspectives by Jon Mayled - £11.99
St Mark`s Gospel – A New Approach by Michael Wilcockson - £11.99

I would strongly recommend that pupils do purchase their own personal copy of St Mark`s Gospel itself and this is available for £1.00. If you should wish to purchase any of the above please make cheques payable to O.C.C. and address the envelope for the attention of Miss Debbie Roberts.

Our first module after the May half term will be `Prejudice, Equality and Discrimination`. Individual student progress in this module, together with SATs results in English, Maths, Science and performance in the Year 9 R.E. Assessment Tasks will be used to identify which set your son/daughter goes into in September 2008. There will be two top sets, four middle sets and a group following the GCSE Short Course in Religious Studies. Pupils will not be taught in form groups.

If you have any question regarding any of the above, please contact me.

Yours sincerely

Miss Rachel Smith
