BGN Awarded Sporting Secondary School of the Year

At the recent Oxfordshire Sports Awards, hosted by Oxfordshire Council and BBC Radio Oxford, BGN was awarded ‘Sporting Secondary School of the Year’.  The awards ceremony, held at the Kassam Stadium, Oxford brought together the best sporting talent from across the county to celebrate some amazing performances from Oxfordshire individuals, teams, schools and organisations last year.

BGN was recognised for another year of fantastic achievement by teams and individuals. In the academic year 2015/16 BGN had an amazing 22 district winning teams/individuals, with 7 going on to win county titles as well. Students from BGN regularly compete in regional, national and, in some cases, international competitions.  Students are supported, and their success celebrated, by the whole school.

Competition success is only part of the story however, and the award also recognises the numerous ways that sport plays a central role at BGN.  Our Sports Leaders regularly lead, coach and officiate at county events and are held up as important role models, not only from within our school, but across the county. Our Sports Leaders have trained other leaders in our school and Sports Leaders from schools within the North Oxfordshire district. There is an active Sports Council that meets regularly and many of their recommendations and requests have been actioned.

The Duke of Edinburgh scheme is extremely popular with all levels – Bronze, Silver and Gold – being offered and undertaken by our students. BGN’s PE department are particularly pleased with the sports participation rates and are proud that we are often able to put out ‘A’ ‘B’ and ‘C’ teams , something that unfortunately has become very rare in the state school sector. The benefits that pupils gain from representing their school in competitive sport is something that very much drives the department.

We are very proud that our work in providing sporting opportunities for our young people has been recognised with this award and are grateful to Oxford Council, Oxford Sports Partnership and BBC Radio Oxford for promoting Oxfordshire sport with this prestigious event.

This award is a whole school achievement as all members of the school community play an important role in the sports success enjoyed at BGN.
