19th May 2008

Dear Parent/Guardian

Now that Year 9 students have completed their SATs, it is our intention that after the May half term all Year 9 form groups will begin their GCSE Religious Studies course. As you are aware, GCSE Religious Studies is compulsory at Blessed George Napier and we feel that it will be beneficial to make more effective use of curriculum time by starting the course early.

There are two parts to the syllabus:

Paper 1 : St Mark`s Gospel
Paper 2 : Christian (R.C) Perspectives on Personal, Social and Moral issues

There are two text books we regularly use in school to teach these modules and pupils may wish to purchase their own copy of one or both of these, although there is certainly no compulsion to do so; some parents in the past have asked for a recommendation so that they can support their children at home, so I mention it simply as an option.

Christian Perspectives by Jon Mayled - £11.99
St Mark`s Gospel – A New Approach by Michael Wilcockson - £11.99

I would strongly recommend that pupils do purchase their own personal copy of St Mark`s Gospel itself and this is available for £1.00. If you should wish to purchase any of the above please make cheques payable to O.C.C. and address the envelope for the attention of Miss Debbie Roberts.

Our first module after the May half term will be `Prejudice, Equality and Discrimination`. Individual student progress in this module, together with SATs results in English, Maths, Science and performance in the Year 9 R.E. Assessment Tasks will be used to identify which set your son/daughter goes into in September 2008. There will be two top sets, four middle sets and a group following the GCSE Short Course in Religious Studies. Pupils will not be taught in form groups.

If you have any question regarding any of the above, please contact me.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parent/Guardian

RE: YEAR 11 – GCSE R.E. EXAMINATION

I write to advise you that the GCSE R.E. examination will take place on Wednesday 14th May.

There will be a three hour revision class on Tuesday 13th May from 3.30pm until 6.30pm for all Year 11 students to revise all the key concepts needed for the `Moral Issues` paper.

The classes will take place in Room C2, C3, 5 and Miss Boyle`s classroom. Pupils may wish to bring some extra sandwiches and drinks for the break time half way through the session.

I hope that you will encourage your son/daughter to attend as much of this session as he/she is able to.

Yours sincerely

RE: REVISION DAY – A2 PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION
Wednesday 7th May 2008

There is an excellent Revision Day for A2 Philosophy of Religion taking place in London on Thursday 25th April 2008. This will be beneficial for all students following the A2 course, which is run by the chief examiners – Gordon Reid and Sarah Tyler, who set the exam paper (see attached flyer).

The cost of the day will be £17 and there will also be an additional train fare cost which I have not yet calculated, but should be approximately £7.50.

If you would like your son/daughter to attend the course, please return the attached reply slip below together with cash/cheque for £17 (cheques made payable to BGN School) in an envelope marked for the attention of Miss Debbie Roberts.

Yours sincerely

Religious Studies course (which is compulsary for all students) on Monday 4th June. Their first module will be on Prejudice, Equality and Human Rights. Students may wish to buy their own text books, although there is no requirement to do so. The ones we would recommend are `Christian Perspectives` by Jon Mayled Price £11.99 and
`St Mark`s Gospel` by Michael Wilcockson Price £12.99.
In addition, pupils may want their own copy of St Mark`s Gospel itself and these are available for £1.00. If you would like to purchase an of these, please send a cheque payable to BGN School and marked `Year 9 RE Text Books` and return in an envelope addressed to Miss Debbie Roberts who is based in the office next to the old gym. Thank you.
