• To inspire and encourage students of all abilities to participate and enjoy all aspects of Physical Education.

• To provide a curriculum that is broad and balanced with a wide variety of activities offering equal access to all.

• To differentiate programmes to meet the needs of those physically gifted as well as those whose physical ability/skill is limited.

• To encourage all students to experience at least one of the wide range of extra-curricular activities on offer.

• To instil into students the sound social and moral attitudes of ‘fair play’, sportsmanship and team spirit.

• To equip students with knowledge and understanding to take up worthwhile leisure activities after leaving school.


Facilities:

Sports Hall Activities Room Astroturf

At present we have a gym, sports hall, netball courts, ample field space and an Astroturf area facilitating a full sided hockey pitch, two 5-a-side football pitches, 8 tennis courts (summer)

Key Stage 3

Students in Years 7 - 9 have 4 hours of PE and 1 hour of Dance a fortnight. The curriculum offers a wide range of activities: Football, rugby, hockey, netball, Gaelic football, trampolining, basketball, badminton, health related fitness, gymnastics, tennis, athletics, cricket and rounders.

Key Stage 4

Students in Years 10 and 11 have 4 hours of PE a week. In 2 of these hours they opt into activity blocks for the year containing 6 different activities. The work places more emphasis on students taking a variety of sport linked roles: performers, coaches, officials and analysts. They also have the opportunity to take the Junior Sports Leader Award which is a nationally recognised qualification.

In their other 2 hours of PE students will opt for either a GCSE in Dance or PE or a new vocational course called a BTEC in Sport (Equivalent to 2 GCSEs.) There is also an opportunity for some students to be fast tracked through the PE GCSE (i.e. take it in one year) and in Year 11 follow a course in First Aid and National Governing Body awards.

Course Specification.

GCSE PE: 4 Practical activities (50%), 1 Practical to analyse (10%), 1¾ hour theory exam covering Exercise and Training, Safety Aspects in Sport and Anatomy and Physiology (40%).

GCSE DANCE: Practical exam - Set Study (20%), Performance and Choreography (P=20%, C = 30%), Programme notes (10%), 2 hour written Exam (20%).

BTEC First Certificate in Sport: 3 Units covering: The Body in Sport, Health, Safety and Injury in Sport, Preparation for Sport. This vocational course is equivalent to 2 GCSEs grades A* - C.

Sixth Form Examination PE

Students have the option to take AS and A2 PE or they can take a Vocational course called The BTEC National Award over 2 years (equivalent to 1 A level). In year 1 both courses have 4 hours of curriculum time, one hour being practical. In year 2 both courses have 5 hours of curriculum time, again one hour being practical.

Course Specification

AS: Theoretical Units covering: The Social Basis of Sport and Recreation and Exercise and Training. Assessed through two 1¼ written examinations, 2 practical activities and an oral exam in 1 activity, 2 coursework assignments and 1 project.

A2: Theoretical Units covering: Global Trends in International Sport and Scientific Principles of Exercise and Performance. Assessed through two written examinations, 1 practical activity, 1 coursework assignment, and a Personal Exercise Plan.

BTEC National Award in Sport: Consists of 2 core Units: Sport in Society and Ethics and Values in Sport. 4 Specialist Units: Fitness Testing, Principles of Coaching, Sports Development and Practical Sports Study.

Sixth Form PE

All Year 12 students follow an enrichment curriculum for 1 hour on a Wednesday afternoon. Students have the opportunity to play recreational sport or follow a Community Sports Leaders Award.

Out of School Hours Learning in PE (OOSHL)

The school has an extensive OOSHL programme offering ‘Sport for All’ clubs as well as clubs for competitive opportunities in a large range of sports. Students also get the opportunity to take part in regular inter-house competitions. There are many fixtures against other schools throughout the year.

PE Residential

In Year 8 students have the opportunity to go on a week’s residential to the Outdoor Education Centres at either Glasbury or Kilvrough.

The department runs a skiing trip annually during the February half-term.

There is also the opportunity to go on a World Challenge Expedition in Year 11. Students have so far been to Poland and Morocco.
