James Sturla (Head of PE), Kayleigh Marsden and Antony Coggins (Teaching Assisants) have been working in a School in Durban, South Africa called Brettonwood. This project is in its second year and has been jointly funded by the British Council and UK Sport. The project is called `Ideals` which stands for International Development through Excellence And Leadership in Sport. This is the second phase of this years project coming after BGN hosted a Teacher and two gap students from South Africa in January for 6 weeks. James, Kayleigh and Antony are helping to restructure the school`s PE curriculum, their out of school hours learning, develop leadership skills and experience a different culture and educational establishments. They are enjoying the challenges of a school which does not have planned PE lessons (the students are given a ball and run around for 25 minutes) They are working during a heat wave with temperatures reaching 40 degrees plus with humidity. However, they are also supported by extremely helpful and friendly staff.

We have just finished a sports festival with the grade 8`s (yr7) it was based on an athletics format. Before this took place we introducted a house system into the school. The students then voted for their house captains and selected their team. In the previous three weeks to the festival we taught the students how to perform the different events, which included speed bounce and tug of war. The event was a great success and the principle will now be rolling the house system out to the rest of the school.

James Sturla returned to BGN on Monday 19th March, Kayleigh and Antony returned two weeks later after travelling to Capetown and Kruger National Park.
