Dear Parent/Guardian
As I am sure you are aware, this is a very important time in your son/daughter`s education. The Maths Department at BGN is keen to help you to help your child and work with you to enable them to reach their potential.
To this end we have:-
• Bought revision guides, practice books and papers to enable you to buy them at a much cheaper price than you can elsewhere.
• Paid £400 for the annual licence of the `mymaths` website mymaths.co.uk (see tutor for password /login details) to enable your child to target at home all of the areas that they may need to work on.
• Bought calculators, in bulk to sell at the cost price of £5 so that problems caused by different or old calculators can be avoided.
• Bought pencils and rulers etc to sell in class to enable your child to make the most of their lessons and maximise learning time.
We appreciate your support in ensuring that all pupils come to lessons fully equipped. Please note that no equipment will be available to borrow in the actual SATs exams.
Yours sincerely
Mrs Julie Hart

The Maths Department has organised a day trip to The National Space Centre in Leicester on Thursday 13th March. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child and will be open to all Year 8 students. The trip is of great educational value in many subject areas and has been a great success in previous years. The cost including coach and entrance will be £11.00 and is based on all the Year attending. The children will need to bring a packed lunch with them and we shall arrive back at school in time for the buses.
Please complete the reply slip below and return it together with the payment of £11.00 (cheques payable to BGN School) and return in a sealed envelope marked for the attention of Miss Debbie Roberts by 20th February 2008.

RE: YEAR 11 GCSE MATHEMATICS STUDENT CONFERENCE
BIRMINGHAM CLARENDON SUITES
The Maths Department will be taking 45 pupils to a Student Conference in Birmingham on Wednesday 27th February 2008, as part of their preparation for the GCSE examination in the summer. The conference is primarily aimed at pupils identified as needing some support to achieve that all important `C` grade.
The cost of the trip is £25 per person which includes the coach and the conference Please note, this is to be offered on a first come first served basis. A copy of the aims of the course is attached.
The coach will leave BGN School at 9.15am and return to school between 4.00pm and 4.30pm approximately.
This is a great opportunity for students to attempt different approaches to their learning and take stock of what they need to do to reach their potential in the exams. It will provide advice on various skills which can then be applied to many subjects.
Please complete and return the attached reply slip together with the £25 cash/cheque, (please make cheques payable to BGN School) and mark the envelope with your child`s name and tutor and for the attention of Miss Debbie Roberts.

A team of four of our best Sixth Form mathematicians, Catherine Leigh, Olivia Jones, Tom Haley and Joe Hook, took part in the Regional Final of the Senior Team Maths Challenge at Warwick University earlier this month. Nineteen teams completed against each other from independant grammer and comprehensive schools in the area. BGN did very well but narrowly missed a place in the next round of the competition. The team made the most of the opportunity to look at the University Maths Department at the same time.
Well done to the team and thank you for giving up an evening to represent the school so well.
Maths Revision & Catch Up sessions - Year 11
These will take place on a TUESDAY of WEEK A, after school in Room 4 until 4.30pm. Bring your own work or coursework, or come along and receive help with the topic of the week, Sweets and chocolates are usually up for grabs!
Dear Parent/Guardian
The Maths Department at BGN has purchased a number of publications to help your son/daughter to revise effectively and reach their potential at GCSE. These are available to you at cost price and are therefore much cheaper than can be bought elsewhere. Please complete the order form and return it to the Maths Department together with cash or cheque payable `Blessed George Napier School`.
After the October half term there will be revision sessions in school on Tuesday evenings, week A for pupils to target areas that they find difficult. The Mymaths website www.mymaths.co.uk has also been bought by the school to enable your son/daughter to do online tutorials and practice their skills at home. (Contact your teacher for a password). Using this for a few minutes every day could make a real difference to your child`s grade.
Please encourage your son/daughter to make the most of the lessons, home works and help available to them. All of the staff will work hard to enable each child to do their best in this subject.

The Maths Department has had a busy few weeks. On 7th March we visited the Rutherford Appleton Laboratories at Didcot with a selected group of Year 7`s. There they had the chance to see a genuine Enigma machine and get a detailed backgound on the history of codes. They also enthusiastically tried to solve many other codes and had a wonderful time.
National Space Centre Trip:
On 20th March we took 93 Year 8 students on a cross curricular trip to the Space Centre in Leicester. Prizes for a quiz sheet completed there were given by the Maths, Science and English Departments on 27th March.
Maths Challenge:
A team from Year 8 attended the UK Maths Challenge at Myton School.
