Health and Social Care
Health and Social Care at Blessed George Napier is taught following the Edexcel double GCSE course. This course is taught and examined over a two year period and comprises ten lessons per fortnight. It is made up of four units: two pieces of controlled assessment and two externally marked exams. Controlled assessment, formerly known as course work, is now carried out within a classroom environment but under exam conditions. The first three months will be spent exploring personal development and relationships and will be examined externally in the January of Year 10.
The students’ first controlled assessment explores ‘Health, Social Care and Early years Provision’ and will be completed before the end of Year 10. The second controlled assessment will be taught in Year 11 and focuses on the health of a specific individual. Students examine the care services used by that person and they will then design a detailed health improvement plan and the associated problems of its implementation. Unit 4, an external exam taken at the end of Year 11, will examine the core principles in Health and Social Care.
It should be noted that this course is suitable for those students who are looking to enter the Health and Social care field as a professional. The controlled assessments require the ability to solve problems and produce analytical responses. Health and Social Care as a double GCSE, is an academic subject involving a good deal of independent work, and requires self discipline and motivation if good grades are to be achieved.
