Drama is taught in a purpose built studio.
In Year 9 Drama is taught within English. Students are introduced to the language of Drama and will learn how to use techniques such as still images, thought tracking, slow motion and narration.
At GCSE we follow the Edexcel syllabus. The first year of the course is concerned with the use of drama to explore issues and ideas in response to stimulus material. Students will broaden their knowledge of theatre and drama gained in Year 9, become confident in their use of technique and begin to develop their evaluative skills.
At GCSE students will complete two units. Unit 1 involves practical and written activities based on stimuli and a play text. Unit 2 is a practical examination assessed by an external examiner. The students will create their own performance in response to a brief provided by the exam board.
At A Level we follow the Edexcel syllabus. At AS Level students will complete two units. Unit 1 requires the students to explore two contrasting play texts through practical and written responses and evaluate live performance. Unit 2 is an externally assessed performance unit. Students will perform a monologue or duologue and be involved in a group performance.
At A2 students will complete units 3 and 4. Unit 3 will involve the creation of an original and unique piece of theatre with supporting written evidence. Unit 4 is a written examination paper on a set text and another play from a contrasting historical era.
Performance of students work takes place regularly throughout the school year.
